I am considering making a small hackintosh that I could fit into a suitcase (minus monitor) instead of a new laptop.

It comes in at $1500 with a 4k display, that is cheaper than a fairly basic macbook pro 13". It would be more than powerful enough to edit hd and maybe eventually 4k footage and do great with heavy photoshop usage. Also, it would be small enough to fit into a carry on suitcase so I could bring it to japan with me without risking it being destroyed. Though, I would probably get a new display when I go over there due to it’s size.

Just a few small things.

I’d avoid the liquid cooler if you plan to travel a lot. Better to get a tower style if it’ll fit and a low profile one if not. I’m assuming you want to overclock with the K series CPU so the tower is the way to go if possible. I’d also get a beefier GPU if you’re doping any serious video editing/rendering. CUDA acceleration is really nice, if the GPU is powerful enough. 960 at minimum and ideally a 970.

I understand that it’s always a balance of everything plus money, but I’d really try for the better GPU. It makes a world of difference.

Have you looked into a Fractal Node 202? They’re a tiny little mini ITX case that might fit the bill for portability. I have the Phenom in micro ATX (same outside dimensions), and it’s quite a wide one.

Would recommend having a look at this build on YouTube. If you’re set on overclocking/watercooling, the guy even (slightly) hacked his case to fit a 120mm watercooler later.

The thing you’ll struggle with in this case is the mass storage, though you could fit a 2.5 inch mechanical hard drive along with your SSD, or alternatively replace the SSD by an m.2 drive.

Have you checked compatibility with all the parts? I know RAM, the motherboard, and the video card are likely to give problems if there’s something even slightly different.

For the graphics card, I’d recommend an AMD card because the majority work with no modifications, while Nvidia ones can be a pain to get working.

I actually did this when I was at university without a car. I did a lot of train/bus trips with a tower in a suitcase. Good to see you have miniATX in mind already - It will make your build options much better for this application. (I somehow managed it with regular atx. It was a large suitcase.)

Personally? I’d actually just go the macbook route. Real quick before I push my opinion on you why are you wanting a hackintosh desktop in a suitcase over a macbook or laptop? Is it just video editing?

Drop the 6700K and go for 6700.
